This introductory philosophy text has grown out of a combined total of twenty-five years of teaching philosophy to beginning students. Most of these students want an introductory course to give them an overall view of what philosophy is all about. They are receptive to a course that is intellectually challenging, but not one that is frustratingly difficult.
This text differs in important respects from any currently available. We have tried to give students a sense of the range of philosophical questions by organizing our material into chapters representing different areas of philosophy - logic, metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, philosophy of religion, esthetics, and social and political philosophy. Each chapter is divided into roughly equal portions of explanatory text and readings in the following format: the first part of each chapter introduces the student to a particular area of philosophy and suggests the rang of fundamental questions raised in that branch of philosophy. We then focus on one particular problem within that topic around which the readings are arranged.
